Hi,

I have one of these also. I too long thought it was a Japanese copy. But I've discovered recently it's an Italian instrument made by Eko. Google for Eko guitars to get the whole beautiful story on these lovely instruments. In fact, when I saw my good old axe on the Eko website, it tweaked a memory from way, way back. A fellow musician told me it was an Eko bass from Italy but I didn't register until twenty or thirty years later.

The website is www.fetishguitars.com and has pictures of the bass along with thousands of great old Italian, German, and French guitars.

I've had my Shaftesbury Barney Kessel copy since I bought it new in 1971. I paid 71 pounds for it in Glasgow Scotland (that's about $150), still have the bill of sale too. The dealer had sold the case it came with so they threw in a Baldwin hard shell case. The guitar is thinner in the body than the Gibson original and has a much faster, narrower neck. The only thing I've done to the instrument is replace the tuners with Grovers.

Hi Paul. Thanks for posting on my site. I'd love to see a copy of your Shaftesbury brochure. If you want, you can email the scans to me and I can post them for all to see.

Looking forward to them,

Brandon.

Shaftesbury guitars were imported in the UK by the Rose Morris group well into the 70's- I actually have a Rose Morris brochure from the 70's which featured some of the Shaftesbury copies! I have a Shaftesbury 12 string which was bought second hand in the 70's. It plays reasonably, but is very quiet considering how large the body is.
If anybody is interested, I could scan the brochure and maybe post some pics.

Chris - I have just got a Shaftesbury Telecaster for a restoration project. Sadly mine's a bit battered but can be rescued. Does yours have a stock number and a serial number on the back of the headstock? Mine is stock number 3265 and serial number 1787. From various pages visited today and a rough estimation by my uncle who gave the guitar to me, I'd say (if it's similar vintage to mine) that it'll be between 1968 and 1972.

I've got a Shaftesbury Stereo copy of the best-known Rick bass, the 4002. Bought it s/h in 1980...fireburst one-pice of wood and though by a couple of owners of Rick 4002's to be better sounding than theirs.
Unfortunately, one of the pickups somehow got damaged internally (unlikely as it seems, there appaears to be some kind of break in the wound coils inside). Wondering if anybody knows about copy pickups as these days Rickenbacker are charging the earth for replacement pickups as well as their guitars.

I'll take Shaftesbury anyday.
Any info anyone can find on them welcomed!

Hello!

I've got a Shaftesbury Semi Acoustic bass pretty much identical to the one pictured above. I have to say it's so easy to play and sounds really nice too. Any idea how much these things are worth?
